1957: The breakthrough year. After having served his apprenticeship on local West Texas radio in the early 1950s, Buddy Holly spent a year as a solo artist with the unsympathetic Nashville arm of mighty US Decca in 1956 (see El Toro ETCD 1012) which not only proved disastrous commercially, but also denied him the artistic freedom which he desired in order to carve his own niche in popular music. Having learned a valuable lesson in Owen Bradley's clock-watched studio, in early 1957 Buddy Holly formed his own group, The Crickets, and began utilising the well-equipped recording facility belonging to Norman Petty in Clovis, to produce finished masters for the Brunswick and Coral labels, which would include influential rock 'n' roll classics such as "That'll Be The Day", "Peggy Sue", "Not Fade Away", "Oh Boy!" and "Maybe Baby" - all of which can be found on this entertaining and important compilation.

A Top 10 R&B chart act in December 1955 with their Leiber & Stoller produced "Smokey Joe's Cafι", the history of The Robins vocal group goes back a decade before that from their origins in Johnny Otis' revue in the late 1940s, with whom they scored big R&B hits with "If It's So Baby" (#10) and "Double Crossing Blues" (#1). The Nu Niles formed over ten years ago, they split up, they re-formed, members came and went they were finally put to death by their creator Mario Cobo, but they just wouldn't stay dead. Recording at Sun records studios, it's nice to think that the Ramblers ran into lingering ghosts checking out the new blood. After listening to A Date With, if there was indeed any spectral intermingling, the spirits probably offered them a light off their Zippo, gave 'em a pull from their flask and challenged them to a game of dirty pool. In the summer of 1994, I got a short letter from a cat named Pedro Serra who lived in Portugal. He told me that he had a rock-a-billy band called "The Tennessee Boys", and they wanted to come visit us and try to do some recordings at our home in Denver Colorado. I had a number of doubts about their idea and suggested that they think it over quite seriously before making such a decision. After all, they were all very young men, and had never really been away from home before. About three weeks later we got a call from the airport saying that they were here and could we give them directions to our house! We were more than a little surprised to say the least! The Hi-Q's were formed by Paul 'Smokey Links' Cook, Loney Charles and Rudy Varner late in the summer of 2001 . Given their previous success with traditional rockabilly (Country Music Recording of the Year - Detroit Music Awards, VLV Band Competition Winners, etc.), they decided to continue on with even wilder traditional rockabilly and 1950's rock n' roll.
