As the Beat kicks in on you\'re Gonna Lose, it is immediately obvious that the Aces mean business and your heart will be theirs by the end of this 10 tracks debut. Formed in 2000, the country-tinged blues trio had to wait nine years before landing a record deal. However, undeterred the trio persevered and their debut wreaks of steely determination.
Fronted by ballsy 6 if 2 Sky O\'Banion, whose thrustout jaw and slick blond pompadour assure he is a presence not to be missed. He is joined by Mike \'Junk Jonson\' Gutsch on drums and slick suited guitarist Derek Irving. Opting for rhythm guitarist as opposed to a bassist, NO ONE RIDES FREE calls on the skills of both Bop Welsh and Chris Anderson to fill the gap.
Having perfected their craft on the live circuit, the Aces finally get the chance to put their unique take on the genre on record. NO ONE RIDES FREE demonstrates that this is an opportuniy the trio relish.
High on energy the Aces don\'t relent on their journey. As a listener the journey is irrepressible. Be it partaking in their Drinkin\' Song to joining them Knee Deep in The Mud, those hips will be shaking and toes a tappping. Outpour heavy Need Your Lovin\' contrasts stunningly to the downbeat Down InThe Cave, yet throughout O\'Banion\'s holler remains justified and true. Album closer Kanka Kanka radiates feelgood factor, with a riff so terrifying Ly sensational that the air guitar comes into play. Promising a live energetic set can often be a band\'s downfall when recording, however the Aces do not fall victim of the common flaw. Having recorded the set live in a studio, using 1940s microphones and no dubbing, the freshness of NO ONE RIDES FREE is undeniable. The Aces may have to wait nine years for that record deal, but now they\'ve got one, they are determined to make up for lost time. They may be right to say that NO ONE RIDES FREE, but when the ride is as exhilarating as this, then there will be no complaints.JW
